Climate change stands as one of the most pressing and complex challenges of the 21st century, impacting ecosystems, economies, and human health worldwide. The increasing frequency of extreme weather events, rising sea levels, changing disease patterns, and air quality degradation underscore the need for dedicated efforts to understand and mitigate the health impacts of climate change. Recognizing the urgent need to address these challenges, the Center for Climate Change and Health Research was established in 2023 (1402 in the Iranian calendar) as a pioneering institution in Iran, solely focused on exploring the intersection of climate change and health.
The establishment of this Center marked a milestone for Iran and the region, as it became the first specialized research center of its kind. Operating under the Environmental Research Institute at Tehran University of Medical Sciences, the Center was designed to bring together leading researchers, health professionals, and environmental scientists to tackle the health impacts of climate change. Its core mission is to conduct high-quality, evidence-based research that informs policies and practices, strengthens community resilience, and supports climate adaptation strategies that safeguard public health.
As climate change continues to pose unprecedented risks, the Center has committed itself to proactive initiatives, encompassing a wide range of research areas—from air quality and respiratory health to heat stress and vector-borne diseases. Through collaborative projects and partnerships with national and international bodies, the Center is at the forefront of addressing climate-related health risks and ensuring that Iran is better equipped to protect public health against climate change's evolving threats.
The Center’s work also includes public outreach, education, and community engagement efforts. By disseminating research findings and raising awareness, the Center aims to foster a more climate-conscious society prepared to adopt sustainable practices and mitigate health risks. As a vital resource for policymakers, healthcare professionals, and communities alike, the Center for Climate Change and Health Research continues to play a crucial role in guiding Iran toward a healthier, more resilient future in the face of climate change.
