About the HERO Course at the SPH-TUMS

The School of Public Health (SPH) introduces the HERO (Health in Emergencies and Relief Operations) Course, maintaining a dynamic network of partnerships and collaborations with notable organizations such as the World Health Organization, International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent (IFRC), International Committee of Red Cross (ICRC), UN agencies and other international Organizations. At SPH, students have the unique opportunity to learn from pioneering and distinguished faculty known globally for their expertise in public health emergencies and disaster response. The HERO course is meticulously crafted to equip students with practical, field-based skills essential for handling health crises due to man-made emergencies, conflicts, natural disasters, and epidemics. It's designed for those actively working or aspiring to work in emergency health sectors both regionally and internationally. By enrolling in this intensive program, participants don't just gain academic knowledge; they immerse themselves in the reality of health emergencies, engaging in hands-on activities and simulations that mirror real-life challenges. Course Description                                                                       

The HERO (Health in Emergencies and Relief Operations) Course is a focused program conducted annually at SPH-TUMS, specifically designed for practical, field-based learning in emergency health scenarios. Emphasizing hands-on training and simulations, this full-time course equips participants with the skills needed for effective response in disaster situations. The program facilitates an immersive learning experience aimed at professionals in the health emergency sector.

 

Admission Requirements (Eligibility Criteria) 

All applicants for the HERO Course must meet the following criteria:

  1. At least 1-3 years' work experience in humanitarian crisis or related fields.
  2. Active or upcoming involvement in managing interventions or operations in emergency settings.
  3. Professional background in health (e.g., doctors, nurses, and public health officers), engineering (e.g., water and sanitation), strategic management, or other disciplines related to humanitarian crisis management.
  4. Proficiency in English, capable of communication and active interaction during the course.
  5. Selected by the Admission Committee based on professional experience and academic background.

Additionally, the following criteria are preferred:

  1. Diverse professional expertise and experience from different regions and organizations (e.g., Ministry of Health, Red Cross/Red Crescent, UN agencies, NGOs).
  2. Individuals pursuing continued education in related fields.

 

Tuition Fees

The tuition fees for the HERO Course is 1100 USD. Some participants may receive full scholarships from TUMS (only insurance, meals and dormitory).

Admission Procedures 

The HERO program is limited to 30 participants per academic year to maintain a high quality of learning and interaction. The TUMS Admissions Committee reviews all applications thoroughly to select the most qualified candidates. Acceptance letters will be issued by TUMS and sent to the successful applicants, confirming their admission to the program.
